The final meeting was held on August 31. One of the recommendations was for the Department to make an even greater commitment to community policing by putting a face on our officers with our community. In addition, greater foot patrols were also requested. Although many things that were discussed will take a commitment to increase staffing, using volunteers and other creative measures, there are some things we can do immediately. Towards this end two programs have been implemented within the Department. These are listed below. NEW POLICE CAMPAIGN Mount Rainier First, Caring for Our Community Mount Rainier First, Caring for Our Community Mission Statement I am employed by and serve a community of residents and business owners that care about their community and look to me to resolve conflict, be fair and impartial when I enforce the law and police with compassion. Caring - concern for the interests of others. Citizenship - contribute to the overall public good. II. IV. Catch someone doing something right campaign. When performing my duties I will acknowledge the efforts of my co-workers that do the right thing. I will inform my supervisors by e-mail, memorandum or letter of his/her efforts and request that the co-worker be commended or recognized for their efforts. This Do the Right Thing campaign also extends to all employees of the City and our residents and visitors. FOOT PATROLS In an effort to save gas and to have our officers be more visible in the community , I have instructed our officers to park their patrol cars for at least 15 minutes every hourof every day and to walk inthe designated areas.Areas include, but are not limited to 3100-3500 block of RI Avenue, 3700-4000 block of 34th Street, 3100-3600 block of Perry Street, 2100-2400 block of Varnum Street and the 3200-3300 block of Queens Chapel Road. Supervisors may also direct staff to walk where they believe this effort will maximize our exposure. It is not necessary to "pair" up as we would like as much coverage as possible during the foot patrol. I have also attached an electronic version (WORD) of the Community Concerns and recommendations.
